Zero Gravity - My Jeffrey Dahmer

I recently received a very friendly request from the band Zero Gravity to review their latest single, and I was happy to give it a listen. From Innsbruck, Tyrol, Zero Gravity is a band that thrives on unpredictability. Formed by Dionys Dorner (vocals, guitar) and Daniel Berger (drums) in their teens, and joined by Christian Hubmann (bass, vocals), the trio has carved out a path defined by bold experimentation and a refusal to be boxed into a single genre. Their music blends punk, rock ‘n’ roll, grunge, and now gothic and metalcore elements, with a recurring “broken glam” aesthetic — raw, chaotic, yet undeniably engaging.

Their latest single, “My Jeffrey Dahmer”, is a provocative, ironic take on love songs, using a shocking metaphor to explore romantic failure with absurdist and nihilist undertones. The track carries a bitter sense of humor, with chaotic shifts in tone and energy that mirror the tension of its lyrical themes. Dionys’s vocals, at times reminiscent of early Nirvana, carry a raw, edgy quality that pairs with gritty, grunge-inspired guitars, while punk-driven drums and rock’n’roll grooves push the track forward with relentless energy. Despite its dark and ironic concept, the song is undeniably catchy, with hooks that stick in your head long after it ends.

Personally, the song didn’t fully resonate with me. The blend of punk, rock’n’roll, and grunge, along with the ironic, dadaist approach, felt a bit overwhelming, and the Nirvana-inspired tone didn’t quite connect with my tastes. Yet, it’s impossible to ignore the creativity at play — Zero Gravity is clearly unafraid to experiment, combining intense riffs, dark humor, and memorable hooks in a unique, if polarizing, package.

In the end, “My Jeffrey Dahmer” is a bold and unusual track. It may not appeal to every listener, but it showcases a band willing to push boundaries and confront the listener with both discomfort, wit, and an unexpected catchiness. For those who enjoy chaotic, ironic, grunge-infused punk, Zero Gravity offers something distinctively their own.
