For Ruin - Painted in colours of War
My review on For Ruin - Painted in the colours of War
Painted in the colours of War
Painted In The Colours Of War is an album defined by atmosphere. From the very start , the mood is dark, heavy, and emotionally. This is not a record that rushes to impress, instead, it builds patiently, layer by layer, allowing tension and weight to accumulate before it finally releases. And when it does, it hits HARD.
Musically, the album sits firmly within melodic blackened death metal. The guitars balance heaviness and melody well, creating riffs that feel both aggressive and expressive rather than purely technical. The drums are powerful and well-placed, giving the music a strong sense of drive without overwhelming the rest of the instrumentation. Everything feels intentional and controlled, yet never sterile.
One of the key strengths of this album is that it demands more than one listen. At first glance, nothing necessarily jumps out as flashy or immediate, but with repeated spins the details begin to surface. The songwriting reveals subtle variations between tracks, and the album as a whole starts to feel more cohesive and rewarding the deeper you go.
The vocals deserves a mention, they are raw, unpolished, and genuinely painful, carrying a sense of real emotional weight rather than forced aggression. There is an honesty to the performance that elevates the material significantly. The vocals feel like the emotional core of the album, tying the dark atmosphere and lyrical intent together in a very convincing way.
Production-wise, the album is tight and well-balanced. Nothing sticks out in a distracting way, and every element has its place in the mix.In many ways, this restrained approach works in the album’s favor, allowing the performances, especially the vocals....to shine.
Certain tracks stand out more than others. The Blood of Earth makes a strong impression, while True North is a clear highlight. The slow build-up in True North, combined with its rhythmic sections, is particularly effective. When those rhythms lock in, the song becomes incredibly powerful, one of those moments where everything clicks and the album fully delivers on its promise.
This isn’t an album you throw on in the background. It needs the right mood and a bit of patience. Give it a few listens and it starts to make sense. When it hits, it really hits.
Rating : 7/10
