Abysmal Grief is an Italian occult doom metal band with a long-standing presence in the underground. Their music is slow, atmospheric, and heavily reliant on organ and keyboard textures, drawing from classic doom traditions. Their latest album continues down this familiar path.

Judging doom metal is always a bit of a risk, especially when it ventures deep into occult territory. Questions tend to surface along the way: Who am I stepping on? What am I not fully understanding? And is this an album that demands complete submission rather than critical distance?

The album opens with sounds strongly reminiscent of a churchorgan, placed within a clearly occult soundscape. Under different circumstances this could easily feel overdone or even parodic? But here it works surprisingly well. Abysmal Grief firmly situates itself within the old-school doom tradition, where atmosphere always takes precedence over tempo and technical finesse. The result is an album with a consistently theatrical aura, strongly reinforced by the use of keyboards.

There are also powerful riffs buried within this murky mass of atmosphere, but it is the mood that takes center stage ,and that mood is relentlessly dark and a bit gloomy. This is doom metal that demands total immersion and the right state of mind, something I wasn’t quite in during my listen. For me, it ultimately drifts into being somewhat monotonous, much of the album operates within the same tonal range, and I struggle to find a true highlight that really stands out or leaves a lasting impression.

That said, this is not a bad album. The production is solid and successfully carries the theatrical and occult intent in a very convincing way. For fans of this particular strain of occult doom, this will hit the mark perfectly. Personally, I need a bit more variation to stay fully engaged ,and here, it ends up feeling a little too dull for my taste.
