Sinsaenum is a band I’ve followed for a while. Formed back in 2016 by Frédéric Leclercq and Joey Jordison, they came with the promise of extreme metal played by musicians from some of the biggest bands out there – DragonForce, Kreator, Mayhem, Dååth. Their first two records, Echoes of the Tortured (2016) and Repulsion for Humanity (2018), set the tone for what this project was about. Now they return with their third album, In Devastation, the first without Jordison, and an album that carries a lot of weight because of that.

The title track opens things up with heavy groove and a dark atmosphere, and right away you get a sense of how massive this record is going to be. The production is clear and powerful, everything sounds sharp and in-your-face. Still, as I listened through the album a few times, I found myself struggling a bit with the overall flow. Some songs feel overloaded, almost like too many ideas competing at once.

What keeps me coming back are the vocals and the melodic side of this record. Sean Zatorsky and Attila Csihar make a really strong team ,their delivery adds intensity and personality that makes certain tracks stand out. For me, the highlights are “Shades of Black”, “Obsolete and Broken”, and “Last Goodbye.” These songs strike the right balance between brutality and melody, and they actually stick with me after listening. On the other hand, “This Wretched World” just doesn’t work. The theatrical synth parts feel out of place and break the momentum completely.

So, In Devastation leaves me with mixed feelings. It’s huge, emotional, and often really impressive, but I don’t connect with it all the way through. When it works, it works brilliantly – but as a whole, it’s uneven. Still, if you’re into extreme metal with a strong melodic streak and powerful vocal performances, it’s worth checking out.
