My Review of Lamp of Murmuur - The Dreaming Prince in Ecstasy
Lamp of Murmuur – The Dreaming Prince in Ecstasy
Lamp of Murmuur is a one-man black metal project that has steadily built a name in the underground with a distinct and atmospheric approach to the genre. The Dreaming Prince in Ecstasy was my first real encounter with the band, something that can go both ways when approaching a new release with no prior expectations.
From the start, the album feels ambitious and experimental, while still being rooted in black metal. There are clear influences from gothic metal and several symphonic passages woven into the music. The album has a strong sense of cohesion, pulling the listener into its world almost without explanation. It feels complete in its own way, even when it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why.
That said, this is where my personal taste comes into play. Those who know me know that I’m not particularly fond of progressive elements in black metal, and on this album, especially in the second half, there is more of that than I would like. While it sounds well thought-out and undeniably ambitious, parts of the album drift a bit too far in that direction for me.
One of the main issues for me is the use of clean vocals on some tracks. While the idea may be intentional and artistic, it doesn’t work for me. A song like “Hategate” is otherwise very strong, but the clean vocal parts take me out of the experience and ultimately weaken the impact.
Still, this album surprised me. Even if it didn’t fully land for my taste, it left me curious. I feel the need to revisit both this album and Lamp of Murmuur’s earlier work, and it’s very possible that this is a record that reveals more with time and repeated listens.
