Ashbringer - Subglacial
My review on Ashbringer's Subglacial
Subglacial
Ashbringer are an atmospheric black metal band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They mix folk-inspired melodies with emotional black metal and have built a solid name within the modern atmo-black scene.
Subglacial is my first time hearing this band. I haven’t listened to any of their earlier releases, so this comes with no comparisons and no expectations. This is simply my first meeting with Ashbringer.
Right from the start, this album pulled me in. It doesn’t rush, it builds. There’s atmosphere all over this record, but it doesn’t feel cold or distant. To me, it feels grounded. Melancholic, yes , but also a sence of warmth.
The production really works here. It’s tight and clean, but still a bit raw. And that raw edge is a good thing. Nothing feels overdone. The guitars sound clear, the drums feel natural, and the vocals sit right where they should. It sounds honest.
The title track “Subglacial” is a highlight. At over eight minutes, it takes its time and earns it. I love the way they mix acoustic and electric guitars. It adds depth and gives the song warmth. The vocals are solid ,real black metal vocals. No gimmicks, just intensity. The song flows well and keeps its melodic and rhythmic drive all the way through.
I also noticed some blues-inspired touches in certain guitar parts. It’s subtle, but it adds character. It keeps things from sounding too standard or predictable.
The only track that didn’t fully click for me was “Send Him to the Lake.” It leans a bit too much into post-metal for my taste. Some riff sections work, but overall it feels like the weakest track on the album.
As a whole, Subglacial felt like a journey. Like walking through a forest at dusk. There’s mood, there’s movement, and there’s something calm but intense underneath it all. For a first encounter with Ashbringer, this was a strong one. I definitely want to hear this again , and I’d love to spin it on vinyl.
Rating : 7/10
